We will be siding both the new garage/studio and the house with corrugated Corten steel. It's also known as weathering steel because it's designed to stylishly rust. It has been used on a lot of commercial buildings like the one pictured below. It changes constantly as it weathers but never needs maintenance. We're excited to see how it will look on our buildings and give them a modern look at the same time as a rustic one.

STUDIO IS TAKING SHAPE
This is the first post on this blog of our actual construction project. The previous ones have just been ideas. You can see here that the studio atop our garage (working title: "The Upper Room") is coming together. The east side of this room as a ceiling height of 13' while the west side has a ceiling height of 5'. This rising roof-line is very dramatic and the metal is reflective, giving us maximum light.
They've just installed the Pella windows on the east and west sides, put the drywall up and the corrugated metal ceiling. The other widows will be fixed glass and they should be arriving in a couple of weeks. The final picture shows the outside of the building.

OPEN STAIRCASE
We want the stairs from the basement to the first level and then from the first level to the second to be open and modern. Here are some examples and inspirations.
Though these aren't open-backed, I do like the side profile of these and they could be constructed. |
I particularly like the one brace down the center of these stairs. |
These may be the style we want for the stairs to the cupola |
These stairs appear to be braced in the walls and look like they are floating. I like this look, too. |
These are a the ones available as a kit but are grossly overpriced |
Just discovered this amazing design by Francesco Librizzi, which is as much a sculpture as it is a staircase/ladder. It's an extremely high priced item from Italy but perhaps we could find local iron workers who could create something similar. |

BAMBOO PANELING
For the walls, we plan to go with bamboo paneling by Teragren (see link). Here are some pictures I've found with bamboo on the walls. It gives it a nice warm look.

HERMITAGES
Also important to our vision for The Gentry Joint property is the creation of hermitages. These are tiny retreat spaces for people to pray, meditate, laugh, create or just get away from the busy world to be mindful. And let's face it: we love small dwellings. Here are some ideas that delight us. We'd like the put the first one high atop the big limestone cliffs. We don't plan to have indoor plumbing or electricity. Just a tiny wood stove and some candles.
Plans for this available at this link. |
Maybe with a breakfast nook inside like this one. |
I'm interested in this design, but on the ground. |
BLACK & WHITE BATHROOM
Here are our bathroom ideas.
Black and white color theme. Not exactly like this but this is the concept. |
This is closer, as we plan to have black tile on the floor and two of the walls. |
We have already purchased this floating vanity from Ikea. The sink gets plumbed through the top drawer. |
Here's a picture of the sink top and faucet I purchased for the vanity. |
Here is another view of the vanity. |
We've also purchased a mirrored cabinet for above it. I believe both are 39" wide. We also have a florissant light that goes with it. |
For the shower, we want just one piece of glass separating it from the rest of the bathroom like this. |
We plan to get this Moen S630 Velocity 8" Rainshower Showerhead and plumb it straight down from the ceiling. |
THE RED KITCHEN
The kitchen plans coming together! I've always wanted a red kitchen. Below is the design and other pictures of inspiration.
This is the kitchen, designed with the help of Obert Johnson from ProBuild, Waukon. The cabinets will be custom painted red and the countertop will be white quartz |
Another view of the design |
